This review is a long time coming! My wife and I checked this restaurant out when we first moved to Rockland two months ago and have been back several times since. We even recommended it to my brother-in-law and his wife who have also become huge fans of this restaurant.
The ambiance is warm with a smallish, chic bar constructed of sparkly black Ubatuba granite up front. You’ll find that the place in general is a bit on the small size, but the restaurant makes good use of its limited space by orienting the tables to face the front/back of the restaurant in the narrow portion of the dining area – the more square sized part of the dining area has the tables facing left/right.
While not the most intimate of restaurants due to its size, I still think it’s a good place to bring a date or go for an anniversary dinner.
The pasta is made fresh in-house daily and is superb, cooked perfectly. They typically have several specials which change daily and is based on what’s fresh and available locally. They have a decent wine list though I feel they could use a few more by-the-glass options. I haven’t tried any of their cocktails but will update if/when I do!
Anyway, my wife and I came here for what must have been at least our 5th time already (we’ve been in the area for less than two months) with her brother and his wife.
Once you’re seated, someone will bring some warm, chewy bread with garlic-infused olive oil. The bread is nothing to write home about – it’d be nice if they served a more crusty bread, but hey, we didn’t come here for the bread (unlike the time we went to Joël Robuchon to get a taste of the famous bread cart).
Anyway, I ended up getting the duck. It came with butternut squash, however I asked if I could substitute it for mashed potatoes with goat cheese and rosemary (this was a side that came with the rack of lamb). They were more than willing to accommodate the substitution.
The duck was absolutely delicious – the deeply flavored skin was crisp and one could hear the *crunch* *crunch* sounds as I bit down while the meat was moist, tender, and flavorful. I really didn’t think the dish could have been any more perfect…. except, somehow it was due to the rosemary mashed potatoes with goat cheese.
Mashed potatoes, when done right, are pretty yummy on their own without any need for anything additional. However the addition of goat cheese and rosemary really takes it to another level as these are amazingly, extra-specially good. It has a more creamy, slightly tangy taste from the goat cheese while the rosemary provides a bit of an earthy, savory feel.
My brother-in-law got the lamb chopse which also came with the mashed potatoes and veggies on the side.
He was nice enough to share one with me (thanks BIL) – these were so tender and had a rich flavor with a hint of delicious fat that’s unique to lamb. You may not be able to tell from the photo since it’s a bit dark, but they were cooked to a perfect medium-rare. Also a very generous portion considering the quality and price!
My wife got a lovely fish that was perfectly prepared (according to her). She was very happy with… in fact, she was so pleased with it that she didn’t leave me a bite :(. It came with a beet risotto which she said was interesting.
My sister-in-law got the spicy seafood linguini which came with a good amount of various seafood such as shrimp, mussels, clams, and scallops. She loved her dish as well – the only minor complaint were the mussels – they were okay, but all the other seafood was delicious.
The service here is great. The staff is very friendly and as I mentioned above, very accommodating. They were great with refilling our waters and making sure that we were doing fine without being intrusive.
Can’t wait to go back!
